How to login GST portal online in India

The GST portal is a one-stop website for taxpayers across India to manage their GST compliance. It's hosted by the government at https://www.gst.gov.in/. Whether you need to register for GST, file returns, make tax payments, or apply for a refund, the GST portal is your central hub.

The GST portal facilitates all communication between the department and taxpayers. This includes accepting, rejecting, or forwarding applications, as well as providing official notifications and a platform for taxpayers to respond to them.

In order to Login on the GST portal, first we need to register on the GST portal.

Registration on the GST Portal-

Following steps will guide us to Register on the GST portal

  • Go to the official GST portal ‘www.gst.gov.in.
  • Click on 'Register Now' under 'GST Practitioners'.
  • Select 'New Registration' and fill out the application form.
  • Upload required documents.
  • Verify your OTP.
  • Submit your application and an acknowledgement number will be generated.

During the registration process for GST, the applicant first gets a Temporary Reference Number (TRN) for smooth completion of the registration process. Once the registration is done, the Temporary Reference Number (TRN) gets converted into a GST Username and Password.

Tracking the application- You can also track the status of your application through the GST Portal using the ARN(Application Reference Number).

Once your application is reviewed and approved by the GST officer, you'll receive your official GST Identification Number (GSTIN). You'll also be assigned a username and a password to access your GST account through GST Portal.

Log in to the GST portal using your credentials-

  • First time login- To login to the GST Portal for the first time, begin by clicking the "Login" icon on the home page and selecting "First Time Login." Enter your initial ID/UIN/GSTIN, the password you received via email, and the captcha and Click "Login." You'll then need to create a new username and password. A success message will appear, confirming your credential creation. Upon your first login, you'll be requested bank account information through a non-core amendment application. Edit the application type and add your bank account details. Finally, submit the application.
  • Subsequent login- Go to the GST portal and click on the ‘Login’ link in the top right corner of the website. Then click on ‘Login’ after entering your email, password, and captcha code. After the GST login, you’ll see your dashboard. You will see a list of the function of the GST Portal like the “FILE RETURNS” tab, the “PAY TAX” tab, Annual Aggregate Turnover (AATO), notices/orders issued, and saving forms under the “FILE RETURNS” tab.

Services available on the GST Login Portal-

Registration -The "Services" tab on GST login Portal provides a link for individuals to register for a new Goods and Services Tax (GST) registration. GST registration is mandatory for businesses selling both goods and services if their annual turnover surpasses Rs 20 lakh (Rs 10 lakh for businesses located in North-Eastern states and hill states). For sole proprietors dealing exclusively in goods, the turnover threshold for mandatory GST registration is Rs 40 lakh, subject to specific conditions.

Payments - Registered GST taxpayers can utilize this tab on the GST Portal to generate and settle various types of GST challans. The system also facilitates the monitoring of payment progress.

User Services - This tab on GST Portal login page contains utilities like The Holiday List, Generation of a User ID for an Unregistered User and Locating a GST Practitioner

Refunds - This option allows the customer to track the status of his GST refund application.

e-Way Bill System - The "E-way Bill System" tab redirects users from the GST Portal to the dedicated e-way bill portal. This portal offers valuable resources such as Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and a user manual. Furthermore, this section provides access to various functionalities, including filing clarifications, generating GST challans, locating GST practitioners, and tracking the status of refund applications using the Application Reference Number (ARN).

GST Portal Support

You can seek support for the GST Portal using the below mentioned help desk number of the Grievance Redressal Portal. Help Desk Number: 0120-4888999. A grievance regarding GST Portal can also be submitted on the GST Portal through Grievance option under the User Services menu on the GST Login page.

You can submit grievances both before and after login into the GST Portal. However, if your grievance pertains to payments, you must be a registered user or taxpayer, as submitting such grievances requires you to provide your Goods and Services Tax Identification Number (GSTIN).
